How to Create a Dissolve Effect on an Object

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to take any object or person and give it a dissipating/disbursing effect. A nice effect to emphasize on a photo that has some sort of movement to it (wind in this particular case). A simple and nifty trick for editorial photos.

Get a Photo

As I mentioned above, this effect goes hand in hand with photos that have some sort of movement to it, say, a girl dancing or a car driving by. But of course, you can apply this effect to any photo you want.

How to Create a Dissolve Effect on an Object

Erase the Edges We Want Dissolved

Create a new layer and call it “Erase”. Now brush the edges of the object we want dissolved by sampling the background color and using the brush tool to stroke onto the edges of the object. Here’s my brush settings I’ve used below:

Duplicate the Background Layer

Duplicate the main background layer of the photo and name it “Liquify”. Make sure it’s above the “Erase” Layer.

Liquify Edges

Go to Effects > Liquify in the top menu. Set your brush size to something like 30px and brush density & pressure both to 100. Now just pull the heck out of the edges you want to dissolve in a fashionable manner. Try not to distort detailed features (like her face in this example) too much where its completely blurred out.

Apply Layer Mask

Now apply a layer mask, go to Layer > Layer Mask > Hide All.

Apply the Dissolved Particles

Click on the layer mask that’s attached to the “Liquify” layer. Select the Brush tool using the same settings, make #FFFFFF (White) as your active swatch color and now the fun part, begin stroking on the particles onto the canvas. That’s it!

nice tutorial.. how did you get the colors to match when you brushed over the edges?

I used “color overlay” in the blending options for the layer. I just sampled the background for the best match with the eyedropper tool.
